Pre-Seed Funding

The earliest formal stage of startup funding, used to validate an idea and build an initial product or team.

Pre-seed is the first institutional-style round a startup raises, typically before meaningful revenue. In the UK it usually ranges from £50k to £500k and comes from founders, friends and family, angel investors, or early-stage funds. Capital is used to test the core hypothesis, build an MVP, and reach early signals of demand. Rounds are often structured as equity or via convertible instruments (e.g. ASA/SAFE-style agreements), and frequently make use of SEIS to attract investors.

Examples

A two-founder SaaS company raises £150k pre-seed from three angels under SEIS to build a beta and acquire its first 50 users. — A hardware startup raises £250k pre-seed to produce a working prototype.
